New Ellenton has an unusual origin story. The whole town was built in 1952 when the federal government relocated the original Ellenton to make way for the Savannah River Site. Seventy-plus years later, it's a tight community of longtime families, SRS employees, and retirees who chose to stay in a place where the pace of life makes sense.

Most housing stock in New Ellenton dates from the 1950s through the 1980s, with some newer construction out toward New Ellenton Estates and Overlook. The older homes tend to have carpet over original hardwood, a common setup in mid-century SC construction.
